Feeling hopeless after a loan mishap. 8 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 0
I\'ve been paying on my Sallie Mae private loans now for 3 or so years. It\'s been rough because my wife and I have been juggling jobs.

I finally got my career started at the beginning of the year, and by the end of this year we were almost caught up.

I was getting serious about taking care of my loans, which were behind, and had setup payments.

In october I was talking to a lady at SLM who told me of this new interest rate plan that I could be put on that would loser my payments. I thought that was great, so she helped me set that up. Right when we were almost done, she disappeared. 2 weeks of calling and getting that she wasn\'t available, I asked someone else if they could help me. A supervisor did and set me up on this plan. I had 2 loans that were dangerously closed to default, but already had a payment setup to prevent it. She told me that she would be lowering the payment though to half the original one I had setup, because the new plan I was on would take care of that.

A week later, and after the payment had come out, my 2 loans were in default and I was getting contacted by a collection agency. I called SLM right then and asked what was going on. The first response I got, was that my funds had been put on the wrong loans, and it was already being fixed and would take a few business days. To call back in a week. I did, and it was the same story. I called back again a week later and was told that they were waiting on some signature to approve me for the new interest plan, that I had been put on and already had at this time, made 2 complete payments for. I was told to call back the next day. That was Dec 27th. When I called back on Dec 28th, a supervisor came on and told me that I had been denied the plan and that my loans would stay defaulted. That I had been denied since the 24th.

I am currently in talks with a Consumer Advocate there, who\'s helping me with my case, But I can\'t say that I\'m not extremely scared that these 2 loans of mine are going to be defaulted because of something that was actually out of my hands. I was constantly given wrong info, even when I already had a correct payment set up.

I\'m worried that SLM is going to try and keep me in default and owing 45k that I don\'t have, when I was actually and still am making payments.

I don\'t really know what else to do, I\'m a nervous wreck.

I guess, if nothing else, thanks for letting me vent.

Sallie Mae lies about your account status so they can charge you fees: http://studentloanjustice.org/problem.htm

I suggest you join the class-action suit against them: http://www.jameshoyer.com/problem_sallie_mae.html
