Sallie Mae has really gotten on my nerves lately. I'm a sophomore in college and I deferred my student loans for the semester back in july. Sallie Mae was calling me nonstop in august 7 or 8 times a day telling me that I owed them $300 with a $50 late fee. The first woman was condescending and rude where as the second person was able to explain to me that I have to pay my loans back for every month that I'm not in school. So I paid them under the impression that that was what I was obligated to do. NOW, as of a week ago, Sallie Mae has been calling me from literally 8:01 in the morning to 8:59 at night NONSTOP. Its about 10 times a day now. And 6 or 7 of those calls leave voice messages. And half of them are within an hour of each other. So, now that Sallie Mae officially runs my voicemail box to the point where it is FULL, I decided I should have a little talk with one of the representatives. So, this morning, on the third call at 10:30AM, I answered. The woman told me that my student loans were delinquent and that I owe them for september, october, and november and that I will be charged late fees. I told her she must be mistaken because I DEFERRED my student loans for this semester and she said that I did not defer them and that i put a 3 month forbearance on it for the months of june, july, and august. So, I asked her why I had to pay those months WITH a late fee, nonetheless, when they were in forbearance. Her response was pulled out of nowhere. She responded "Well, what we do is that when you forebear a loan, you don't pay those months until your forbearance runs out and yours ran out in august." or something that was extremely contradicting to what I KNOW. I defered them in July with a form they gave me. I gave it to my school for proof of enrollment. and I APPARENTLY did not Defer my loans, I unknowingly put a 3 month forbearance on them which meant that I had to pay for these stupid loans anyway!!!!! I spoke with a lawyer this morning and they told me to contact the attorney general. Does anyone else have any other suggestions? That's not going to help me in the fact that I was screwed out of $50 for a late fee on the loans during my forbearance months.
